Today I am reaching out because I believe you can make a difference in the lives of our distant relatives in Nima, Ghana. We are all aware of how COVID and the consequent lock-down has impacted Black communities worldwide. Now, as always, unity and co-operative economics makes the difference between life and death.
As of today, there are 641 confirmed cases of COVID in Ghana and 67 ventilators in the country.
The lock-down and social distancing measures being taken there to maintain security is for the privileged. Meanwhile, for thousands of families who are supported by market and street selling, money making has completely halted. And there are inner-city areas like Nima which were simply not built with 6 feet of space for everybody. Below are pictures to demonstrate this. In Nima alone, there are already 31 cases of COVID.
I am deeply connected to Spread Out Initiative in Nima since I spent half a school year supporting their creative community programs. While checking in with their founder and director, Yussif Aminu Larry, he mentioned the economic hardships in the community and how it is affecting the youth in their programs.
We are requesting funding to support SOI in buying essentials from local businesses, to hand out to families for free.
These essentials include food water face masks and Black soap:– The budget for food (in Ghanaian cedis) to support 150 families for a few weeks is attached below. It currently converts to $2,497.71.
In total, our fundraising goal is $3,000 USD. Honestly, we hope to exceed this goal to reach more families.
I am sending this to you with the request to support the bare necessities of just a few families on the continent dealing with this crisis. You can send the funds to me via PayPal, CashApp ($ChaseSpears), Vemno (@Chase-Spears-2), or direct bank transfers and I will be sending what we raise to Larry from there.
You can contact the organization and its founder in case y’all have any questions. Whether you are in the place to give or not, please share this with others who can support. SOI & Roots Collective would love to collaborate with other organizations in this initiative. We have the community need, skills, and connections to do so and more in the future.
